sewing books

Whenever I run into a sewing problem my first impulse is to turn to one of my trusted sewing books. Here are some of my recommendations:

For beginners I can highly recommend ‘Sew U: The Built by Wendy Guide to Making Your Own Wardrobe‘ by Wendy Mullin. The book includes chapters on getting to know your sewing machine and the basics of sewing. Most of the chapters are geared towards making clothes but most things are applicable to other sewing projects, as well.

Vogue Sewing by Sixth and Spring Books is very detailed and perfect for advanced sewers. It has plenty of illustrations and will answer pretty much any sewing question. This book is not just for home sewers but also geared toward fashion students and industry professionals.

The ‘Good Housekeeping New Complete Book of Needlecraft‘ is not just focused on sewing but includes chapters on knitting, crochet, embroidery and more obscure crafts such as netting, smocking, rug making, hand weaving, and even mending and care. The book also includes some now very retro patterns and projects.

I have an old German version of the ‘Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing‘ and use it frequently to look up certain seam finishes of for finding the right terminology. I have actually seen this book in many of my friends studios.
